Do you know what consent looks like? Are you able to spot a red flag?

Communication and consent are both key factors to recognise when negotiating with others, and are never infinite to those who are in relationships or single. Communication and consent are given and reciprocated, meaning it is never a one-way street.

Now that summer is approaching and good times are just around the corner, communication is of great importance to us all. Learning how to positively communicate with others, whether it be your partner or your hook-up, is essential to us having a good summer where we all feel safe and comfortable.

Even if you’re not planning on going clubbing or physically hooking up with others straight away, consent and good communication still applies to you. Have you ever been texting someone and felt they were giving you mixed signals? Do they only message you when they’re drunk, leaving you in an uncomfortable situation?

These are just some examples of when good communication is a really important skill to have- so that both of you feel respected and no one feels as though they are being taken advantage of. And of course, consent isn’t limited to hooking up- it is relevant to all parts of life! Perhaps your boss is making you feel uncomfortable by pressuring you into doing things that you don’t want to do, or maybe your new partner is making assumptions about what you’re comfortable with.

Trade is therefore running a workshop that will help you understand consent, what it can look and sound like, as well as giving you the necessary skills to help you say no to anything you don’t want to do! Remember, no always means no, and it is perfectly acceptable to change your mind at any point. During the workshop, different case studies about consent will be discussed, which will help you to prepare for any situation you may find yourself in.

The workshop will also be providing you with information on red and green flags when communicating with others. We all talk about red flags in relationships or when talking about a potential hook-up, but what do we actually mean by this? Put simply, a red flag is almost like a warning: it’s something someone does or says that indicates a lack of respect or integrity towards you and your relationship with this person.

On the other hand, a green flag is something that a person does or says that makes you feel comfortable, respected, and listened to. Every healthy relationship or hook-up should involve green flags, where both you and your partners physical and emotional boundaries are respected.

During the workshop, Trade will be providing you with examples of red and green flags, information on how to spot them, and advice on how to move forwards when you encounter a red flag.

We’ll be covering all this and more in our free virtual workshop on Monday 7th June, 6-7pm. This workshop is part of our ‘Cool for the summer’ campaign, where we will be hosting three free virtual workshops in one week with the themes ‘Sex. Love. Life.’

The workshop will provide you with invaluable information on consent and communication that can help you not only be cool for the summer, but also in everyday life. Trade looks forward to seeing you at the workshop!

If you like the sound of the topics that will be covered in this workshop, and would like to find out more on how to be cool for the summer, then feel free to come along.

When you leave the workshop, you will have the knowledge and confidence to look after your sexual health over the summer. We look forward to seeing you there!

The workshop will be running on June 10th via Zoom, 6-7pm on ZOOM
